Know your environment.

This is the first rule of survival. Familiarizing yourself with the particular resources and dangers of your immediate surroundings will greatly improve your ability to survive. Never assume that the grass is greener on the other side. Moving your camp can become necessary for many reasons, but you should always develop a plan based on known factors not on panic.

Never miss a meal.

When you first begin to fend for yourself you may only be able to find things that in your very near past you may have considered inedible. However if you do not put away your prejudices and continue to feed your muscles there  is the very real possibility that you will not live or even have the strength to continue your search for more palatable nourishment. The old adage that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush applies to this scenario. Human beings are omnivores and it may become necessary to become the most skilled scavenger.

Remain calm.

There are three factors in every basic survival situation. Your ability to secure 1.)FOOD  2.)WATER  3.)SHELTER will determine the length and quality of your life. Most people can survive without ill effect 3 days without water and 30 days without food. Your immediate need for shelter will depend on weather conditions and is often the most pressing need. Hypothermia can kill in a matter of hours if conditions are severe. Remain calm and search out a natural shelter if you find yourself out of your element.. Protecting yourself from wind, rain or sun exposure will give you the time you need to consider your options for collecting and purifying water. It may seem overwhelming but food will also need to be discovered or collected within days of discovering yourself  in a survival situation. Although water is the most immediate nourishment needed; food will become increasingly more difficult to secure the longer your body goes without. You will become increasingly weaker and therefore less able to provide for your yourself.
